NOTICE OF RACE

1. RACE MANAGEMENT - A joint race committee of the Shoreline Yacht Club, Dana Point Yacht Club and Dana West Yacht Club will manage the race.

2. SCHEDULE - Starting time: First warning signal (Class flag) will be at 1055 on Saturday August 30, 2008.  The finish deadline will be at 2200, Saturday August 30, 2008.

3. RULES - The race will be governed by the 2005 - 2008 Racing Rules of Sailing and USSA prescriptions, this Notice of Race, the Sailing Instructions, and the rules of any class entered.  The race is classified as a “Category A” event in accordance with RRS 79, Advertising, Appendix I, ISAF Code 20, and is a PHRF Category 3 race.

  4. ELIGIBILITY - The race is open to sailing yachts designed and built to go offshore and having a minimum overall length of 20 feet.  Owners or Charterers must be members of yacht clubs recognized by USSA.  All yachts except for those in non-spinnaker classes must show sail numbers as stated in RRS Appendix G.  Yachts racing in non-spinnaker classes must display a number on the mainsail.  All PHRF and ULDB yachts are expected to have a valid PHRF certificate.

5. CLASSES - There will be two fleets for PHRF-rated yachts (ULDB and Non-ULDB), a Double-handed class, ORCA, and a Non-spinnaker fleet; only headsails allowed in non-spinnaker (RRS 50.4).  Each fleet may be divided into smaller classes.  One-design classes will be given their own start with a minimum of six yachts.

 

6. HANDICAPS - The base random leg ratings of PHRF of Southern California will be used for Spin, ULDB, and Double-handed classes; only the non-spinnaker fleet will use the off wind (OWC) rating with the non-spinnaker offset added.  ORCA will be scored on the “Time on Time System” per ORCA Class Rule 9.1

 

7. COURSES - PHRF, Double-handed and ORCA fleets: Start between two orange-white flags located between Oil Islands White and Grissom in Long Beach Harbor. Leave to starboard an orange inflatable (tetrahedron) mark lying approx. 1/4 n. m. to weather of the starting line.  Sail out the Los Angeles entrance to San Pedro Bay (FLG 15 seconds at starboard end); leave to port oil platforms Ellen and Elly; leave to port Dana Point whistle buoy R2 (FLR 2.5 sec); finish between the green lighted buoy 61 (FLG 2 sec N 33o27’31”; W 117o41’54”) adjacent to the middle of the West jetty at Dana Point and the anchored Race Committee Boat bearing approx. 180o M from the buoy.  Non-spinnaker fleet: Start and finish as described above. Leave to starboard the orange inflatable (tetrahedron) mark; sail out the Long Beach entrance to San Pedro Bay (FL 5 sec at starboard end); leave to port Dana Point whistle buoy R2 (FLR 2.5 sec). Chart 18749 covers both Long Beach and Los Angeles harbors of San Pedro Bay.  Chart 18746 covers the entire race and includes an inset of Dana Point Harbor.

 

  8. ENTRIES - Entries must be mailed or delivered to Shoreline Yacht Club, 386 Shoreline Drive South, Long Beach, CA 90802 by Thursday, August 28, 2008.  The entry fee is $50 for USSA members who have put their membership number on the race entry; it is $55 for non-USSA members.  An additional $10 (late fee) is required of all late entries which will be accepted until 1800 on Friday, August 29, 2008; these entries may be placed in the race entry box at Shoreline Yacht Club.  If submitting electronic entry, entry fee must be received at Shoreline Yacht Club by 0900 on Saturday, August 30.

  9. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - Sailing instructions will be available at SYC and on the web site of all three clubs after Monday, August 4, 2008.

10. SAFETY - All yachts entered shall comply with USCG regulations as well as with the equipment requirements of Category 3 as defined by PHRF of Southern California (a copy or link will be posted with the Sailing Instructions). Yachts may be inspected upon finishing ensuring compliance with the safety requirements.

11. TROPHIES - There will be up to 5 take-home trophies for each class based on the number of entries, plus last-to-finish trophies for the PHRF fleets; perpetual trophies for the PHRF, Double-handed and Non-spinnaker fleets, and for the best-scoring all-woman crew in the PHRF fleet.

12.  HOSPITALITY - Friday evening, August 29: Shoreline Yacht Club will host a pre-race party with live music and dancing beginning at 8:00 pm.  Special “happy-hour” mixed drinks @ $3.00 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, with light appetizers.  “Racer’s Special” dinner option for $7.00; Saturday morning: Special Racer’s Buffet Breakfast for $5.00 between 8:00 and 10:00 am at Shoreline Yacht Club; Saturday evening: Post-race party at Dana Point Yacht Club. Sunday morning: Awards Ceremony at DWYC.

Slips will be reserved in the order in these written requests are received. Each yacht club will do its best to accommodate all; however, it is possible that not everyone will get a slip; therefore, you should be prepared to anchor.  Shore boat service will be provided. Owners of yachts guest-slipped at Dana Point Harbor and Shoreline Marina must present a copy of their yacht’s current registration or documentation, insurance, and personal identification.

In consideration of your acceptance of my entry I hereby agree as follows:

My yacht will be equipped to conform to any USCG safety requirements or those of the fleet in which I shall compete.

Any contestant may request the Race Committee to inspect my yacht before or after the race.

I agree to comply with all rules or sailing instructions governing the race.

I hereby release the clubs, their officers, agents or committee personnel from any and all liability for injury to myself, my crew, or my yacht arising out of their conduct of the race, to the extent that such release does not discharge my insurance carrier under the provisions of insurance policies on my yacht.

I assume any risk of injury arising out of my participation in the race, failure or breakage of my yacht or any equipment, or weather conditions.

I agree not to sail in hazardous conflict with commercial shipping.
